00:00:05.469 --> 00:00:09.574
Hi, welcome to the Arm Guardian Podcast, season 2, episode 14.

00:00:10.140 --> 00:00:24.748
I'm your host today, brian, and we will be talking with Trampus Swanson of Swanson Media Group and also the owner of Swanson Training Group, talking to him about his free online magazine called the Arm Lifestyle Magazine.

00:00:24.748 --> 00:00:28.100
Him about his free online magazine called the Arm Lifestyle Magazine.

00:00:28.100 --> 00:00:42.530
This is a free magazine that will focus on the term arm being educated and prepared mindset to handle critical incidents with the confidence, along with the skill sets and tools that you might need in an arm situation.

00:00:42.530 --> 00:00:47.892
So sit back and listen as we talk to Trampas and enjoy today's episode.

00:00:47.892 --> 00:01:02.026
Hi, welcome to the Armed Guardian Podcast.

00:01:02.066 --> 00:01:03.429
I'm your host today, brian.

00:01:03.429 --> 00:01:16.572
I'm here with Trampas Swanson from Swanson Training Group and we're going to talk about his magazine that his company has for online, or the focuses on armed citizens and training and ideas.

00:01:16.572 --> 00:01:20.296
So, without further ado, how are you doing today, trampas?

00:01:20.296 --> 00:01:22.262
Doing great, brian.

00:01:22.262 --> 00:01:23.063
Thank you for having me.

00:01:23.063 --> 00:01:24.427
Thank you, sir, for coming.

00:01:24.427 --> 00:01:48.691
I know it's been a long time trying to get scheduled and I'm glad that we were able to finally get this done, but I love your magazine and I thought it would be a good topic for us to have on the podcast, since we focus on the civilian concealed carrier and education and knowledge, and the magazine fits all of those profiles that I was wanting.

00:01:48.691 --> 00:01:59.025
So, for those that may not know who Trampas is, why don't you give us a brief overview of who Trampas is and where he comes from?

00:01:59.748 --> 00:02:00.689
All right, we'll keep it short.

00:02:00.689 --> 00:02:05.700
I'm only 5'6", so basically I'm a retired law enforcement officer.

00:02:05.700 --> 00:02:31.943
I did 12 years in North Carolina working in task force, swat, sniper and working with the officers to get their skill sets up so that they could basically, you know, not only qualify but have a little bit better of a skill set, based on the classes I was attending, either through the sheriff's office or on my own personal time working with ARs they were relatively new to our department getting better skill sets with pistols and whatnot.

00:02:31.943 --> 00:02:50.647
With that I was able to retire and move from North Carolina to Florida right after I got married and we established the Swanson Training Group as part of some of our not-for-profit work that we do through what used to be the Well-Owned Woman not-for-profit organization.

00:02:50.647 --> 00:02:52.573
We got into that very early.

00:02:52.573 --> 00:03:14.013
My wife, candice, is an instructor and so she wanted to start something for women only and at the time she was not certified, so she voluntold me me and we started the first of 26 chapters here in florida, uh, which led to her being the state leader and us doing annual events every year for for just women.

00:03:14.013 --> 00:03:15.663
So that was pretty cool.

00:03:15.663 --> 00:03:30.085
That rolled into, you know, with my background of working on guns and stuff like that and training people um the foundation of going from law enforcement to civilian training with the swanson training group uh.

00:03:30.085 --> 00:03:35.584
Later we wanted to help other people with like uh helping get set up.

00:03:35.584 --> 00:03:39.512
So we wound up buying um a company called legacy coin company.

00:03:39.512 --> 00:03:47.132
So we make challenge coins, pins, patches and stuff like that for your favorite training groups uh, for your favorite uh not-for-profits.

00:03:47.132 --> 00:03:50.948
We even do uh the USCCAs pins coins.

00:03:50.948 --> 00:03:54.548
We do um like vortex optics coins and stuff.

00:03:54.548 --> 00:04:01.442
We do a lot of gun industry stuff, a lot of first responders, military and private military stuff, okay, and stuff.

00:04:01.461 --> 00:04:23.927
And in the world of media I've been writing for about 12 years or so for various different titles, from international publications like 22 Shooter and Raider Magazine to national stuff like 1-800-GUNS-AND-AMMO, and being featured in some of the like Recall Combat Handguns, all sorts of product news.

00:04:23.927 --> 00:04:50.593
And I wound up getting to a point where I was, as a lifetime shooter, seeing the huge gap in our 2A community being represented in the media of Caliber Publications, who at the time I was the editor of Private Military Contractor International, which is a publication shared from the US and the UK.

00:04:50.593 --> 00:04:59.351
They supported me in creating a civilian title with helping me get up and running, called the Armed Lifestyle.

00:04:59.351 --> 00:05:09.764
By issue two, they gave me an option of being able to take this over and do our own thing through Swanson Media Group and so starting the issue three.

00:05:09.764 --> 00:05:28.454
This was a self-contained thing that's free to our reader and ad driven from the industry, and we've had an amazing wave of support throughout the industry because it is totally different than what you see on the newsstands.

00:05:28.899 --> 00:05:30.420
Okay, all right.

00:05:30.420 --> 00:05:36.343
So, like I said, the education and everything.

00:05:36.343 --> 00:05:40.105
What kind of topics do you talk about or write about in your magazine?

00:05:40.584 --> 00:05:42.846
Well, that is what separates us.

00:05:42.846 --> 00:05:52.490
My goal was that I did not want to open a magazine and it of children and whole families men, of course.

00:05:52.490 --> 00:06:14.149
But I wanted something for everybody.

00:06:14.149 --> 00:06:20.545
And growing up I started actively shooting like hunting was.

00:06:20.545 --> 00:06:25.031
Pulling the trigger meant something died like a squirrel or deer or something.

00:06:25.031 --> 00:06:27.913
I started actively by shooting.

00:06:27.913 --> 00:06:30.057
That meant something at age four.

00:06:30.057 --> 00:06:33.550
Right, I started squirrel hunting with my dad at age four.

00:06:34.540 --> 00:06:56.127
So at age 48 now, that's 44 years of shooting and a wide range of that I looked at through the 12 years of my law enforcement career and now, as a father of two and a husband, it's not gun, gun, gun related, like what we teach and what's reflected in the magazines.

00:06:56.127 --> 00:06:59.694
And what you teach is not reflected in the magazines.

00:06:59.694 --> 00:07:01.762
So we wanted an education based publication.

00:07:01.762 --> 00:07:12.091
So we wanted an education-based publication, as I said, that would be free for the readers have a free subscription to be able to get notified when issues come out.

00:07:12.091 --> 00:07:16.536
That was education-driven by industry experts.

00:07:16.536 --> 00:07:27.023
Right there it's going to be buying what.

00:07:27.023 --> 00:07:28.165
What goes into buying your first gun?

00:07:28.165 --> 00:07:33.178
Having various different women trainers of like a jamie uh headley and amy lucas from uh still and still others.

00:07:33.178 --> 00:07:36.125
Those ladies are up in detroit, right I?

00:07:36.125 --> 00:07:43.745
They are easily dictated as a expert in the field of what women should know before buying a handgun.

00:07:43.745 --> 00:07:46.903
So so guess who's writing that article For them?

00:07:46.903 --> 00:07:47.987
By them, right?

00:07:47.987 --> 00:07:51.901
And so those type of things we have.

00:07:51.901 --> 00:08:00.041
People like Rob Pincus had came on board early on to talk about defensive shooting I don't know, he only just wrote.

00:08:00.041 --> 00:08:05.100
Like the DSF program, defensive Shooting Fundamentals Program for the USCCA, right.

00:08:05.100 --> 00:08:07.329
Like the DSF program, defensive shooting fundamentals program for the USCCA, right.

00:08:07.329 --> 00:08:17.613
We talk about what you need to know about going into classes, right, what to expect, what to bring, what, what you should look for in a trainer, much less the training class.

00:08:17.613 --> 00:08:23.088
So we explain a lot of popular NRA and USCCA classes.

00:08:23.088 --> 00:08:43.991
We spotlight major training facilities, say, like a gun site or front site or Thunder Ranch or somebody like that, and we also spotlight not only big names that are in the industry and give you a little more background other than just what you see on TV or on Billboard or in the magazine.

00:08:43.991 --> 00:08:48.825
We also humanize them and help you understand they're just like us.

00:08:48.825 --> 00:08:53.447
But also we spotlight local instructors like you and I.

00:08:53.447 --> 00:09:01.344
To let you know you don't have to necessarily spend thousands of dollars to travel across the country to get good quality instruction.

00:09:01.344 --> 00:09:12.113
We have those guys right here in our backyard, and so that's great to understand the tip of the spear, but there's so much more of it.

00:09:12.701 --> 00:09:18.615
So we talk about um mental health, right, we talk about physical health.

00:09:18.615 --> 00:09:23.225
We talk about um fire prevention and at home first aid.

00:09:23.225 --> 00:09:27.380
What you do, you know, glass breaks and you slice your hand open.

00:09:27.380 --> 00:09:34.974
And so we have Dan Tonto, one of our instructors, who's a 32-year paramedic.

00:09:34.974 --> 00:09:42.282
He's, you know, rode ambulance for a strip of galls and some ace bandages roughly about all the fanciness they had.

00:09:42.282 --> 00:09:55.504
And so what you at home can use in the emergency to buy you that time for ems to come or to get to the er, we have um spotlights on just being the best you possible, right?

00:09:55.504 --> 00:10:00.600
Um, not everybody's going to be trained and lose all this weight and become a navy seal.

00:10:00.600 --> 00:10:17.144
But if we can help you find ways to eat better or to protect yourself against heat exposure or something to get you just 20% better than you are now, right, we've already gotten you improved and we can work on that.

00:10:17.446 --> 00:10:26.283
So we have Dr Daniel Mayer on our staff, out of Pittsburgh, 26 years in the chiropractor in the holistic medicine field, right.

00:10:26.283 --> 00:10:29.312
So we're talking about, you know, like this new issue.

00:10:29.312 --> 00:10:45.850
We're talking the importance of hydration going into the summer, importance of, uh, natural herb remedies and stuff like that that are going to uh help you against sunscreen versus and bugs, versus putting on harmful chemicals like deep um.

00:10:45.850 --> 00:11:07.053
So when we bring in those type people that are just on our staff, uh, and bringing in name recognition, like a charlie cook who's known on the in the uh youtube world is writing shotgun with charlie, right, we, we do a tongue-in-cheek kind of thing where his interviews in print are writing Shotgun with Charlie, right.

00:11:08.000 --> 00:11:18.489
And then, just like this wealth of knowledge, like Hall of Fame Black Belt, ninth degree Black Belt, gary Glomboski out of Georgia, right in your backyard with GTAC, right.

00:11:18.489 --> 00:11:25.784
And then we have, like Aaron Cobb from Cobb Diesel Fitness, you know, these big bodybuilder guys.

00:11:25.784 --> 00:11:29.552
They just specifically talk about you and I getting rid of the dad fat.

00:11:29.552 --> 00:11:38.234
You know you mix that in with a bunch of contributing writers, with product reviews and maybe a little spotlight.

00:11:38.234 --> 00:11:41.383
Hey, here's a question for the month type things, months type things.

00:11:41.383 --> 00:11:59.929
And then at the end, one of my favorite segments that we regularly feature is we're getting stories from some of the most amazing people across the country that are brave enough to share their worst day and they share their survivor stories of how they should have known better.

00:12:00.169 --> 00:12:03.386
In retrospect, right, experience is always the best teacher.

00:12:03.386 --> 00:12:14.852
They survived everything from getting beat, senseless and shot in the head to now teaching other people the skills they wish they had had beforehand.

00:12:14.852 --> 00:12:17.831
Right, and then you know.

00:12:17.831 --> 00:12:31.366
And then one of my like nearest, dearest things to my heart is exploring the world of exactly what I had, with this being a lifestyle, not a hobby, not a class you take on the weekends.

00:12:31.366 --> 00:12:36.403
This ain't pottery, this is survival every day, and starting from the ground up.

00:12:36.403 --> 00:12:40.013
That this isn't some like monstrous evil thing.

00:12:40.013 --> 00:12:46.580
Right, and like our daughters um, that's the grace is 10, she's a black belt in taekwondo, right.

00:12:46.580 --> 00:12:57.287
Um, emma is her little sister, she's almost eight, um, coming up very soon, and so she's working her way up on her own black belt journey.

00:12:57.568 --> 00:13:02.965
But what's more important, for the past four or five years they've been taking their little 22s out and shooting.

00:13:02.965 --> 00:13:21.104
They've been working with other instructors, not just us, with their .22 rifles, pistols, airsoft, the CERT guns that just shoot a laser, those type things.

00:13:21.104 --> 00:13:44.393
At-home training that they treat all this stuff with respect and they treat all this stuff as if it's real or not, it's still real to them and demystifying this whole like perception of evil and say this is just tools in your world and let's focus on your self-defense aspect of situational awareness.

00:13:44.393 --> 00:13:49.731
And you know, guns right now are fun until you're old enough to carry one legally.

00:13:49.731 --> 00:13:52.489
So we're just focused on, hey, you know what?

00:13:52.489 --> 00:13:53.364
Shooting can just be

00:13:53.484 --> 00:13:53.705
fun.

00:13:53.705 --> 00:14:07.908
It don't have to be just self-defense and that's what we're seeing in the media all the time, that it's just a focus on gun, gun, gun tool and we need to focus on the mind of the mental health, the preparedness, first aid and all that stuff.

00:14:07.908 --> 00:14:24.100
And so I feel like, from what we're getting feedback from those in the industry instructors like you, people like Ruger, sig and those type people they're chiming in going you know what we deal with so many magazines and so many media personnel.

00:14:24.100 --> 00:14:31.269
We don't really follow magazines, but since this isn't a gun magazine, it's a lifestyle magazine.

00:14:31.269 --> 00:14:40.542
I read this all the time and that's coming from women in these high-ranking positions that we work with through the media, talking about.

00:14:40.542 --> 00:14:43.671
I don't read gun magazines but I read this because it's a lifestyle.

00:14:43.671 --> 00:14:45.245
It's how my kids were raised.

00:14:46.080 --> 00:14:53.591
Much less these dyed-in-the-wool kind of established men in the industry going well.

00:14:53.591 --> 00:14:54.472
That's just different.

00:14:54.472 --> 00:14:56.355
You're right, we are.

00:14:56.355 --> 00:15:07.859
Somebody had to do it and yeah, it costs a little bit to produce this, but the support we're having makes us feel like it's well worth everything we're putting into it.

00:15:08.360 --> 00:15:22.657
Right, and I like the magazine for the aspect because it touches on some topics that I also find near and dear to my heart is training.

00:15:22.657 --> 00:15:25.476
I want you to be educated in handling a firearm.

00:15:25.476 --> 00:15:29.166
I want you to be proficient, be able to use it when you need to use it.

00:15:29.166 --> 00:15:49.625
But I also want to and have focused on the mental and spiritual side a little bit, and I know that we've got Mike Sedini uh, you, you're friends with him also, uh, sarah Albrecht, uh, I've had both of those on uh and you've even delved, delved into the spirituality a little bit.

00:15:50.206 --> 00:16:49.674
The magazine which uh, is something that I think is big, because some christianity, uh thoughts are you know, I can't use deadly force because it's this, it's prohibited or it's against, no, and I think, without diving too far off into that, I think having a understanding of no mindset, a little bit of knowledge on what the spirituality aspect of it is that, no, we't, I don't want you to be froze because you're afraid of what's going to happen in the afterworld, but no, you need to be able to defend yourself and it's just like no Christ, he, no David and Goliath, uh, no, there's documented things in the Bible that self-defense is valid and everything.

00:16:50.019 --> 00:17:02.672
And a lot of people sometimes get caught up in that, thinking that I can't do this meant to carry a pistol and may not.

00:17:02.672 --> 00:17:17.393
May not be the best thing to carry because they don't, they'll freeze up or something, but that will come in training, as long as as you keep educating yourself in the proper use and proficiency of it.

00:17:17.393 --> 00:17:18.824
So I like that.

00:17:18.824 --> 00:17:20.269
No, you're.

00:17:20.269 --> 00:17:22.085
It's a well-rounded magazine.

00:17:22.085 --> 00:17:30.308
All the articles, uh, every uh magazine that I've read, or every edition the articles are.

00:17:30.308 --> 00:17:35.644
You can almost put it in a circle and it comes full circle and I like that.

00:17:36.621 --> 00:17:37.962
That is one of the things.

00:17:37.962 --> 00:17:54.667
When I sit down with this big, massive data bank of articles and you click on each file and there's hundreds of pictures that they're able to give us to choose from, I sit down, I read everything, I edit everything and then, okay, what is a natural flow of this?

00:17:54.667 --> 00:17:57.599
What can take us on the journey to get your attention?

00:17:57.599 --> 00:18:05.614
Welcome, here's what's going on first article and then we have editors notes for me to just kind of line up what to expect or just to have my little rant about the industry.

00:18:05.614 --> 00:18:08.767
Editor's notes for me to just kind of line up what to expect or just to have my little rant about the industry.

00:18:08.767 --> 00:18:19.481
It's my little corner to the to complain or whatever, um, or to just set a record straight on something, right, uh, and then we follow that up with just a.

00:18:19.481 --> 00:18:36.109
Literally I want to look like a fair representation that everything that makes up our lifestyle, everything I grew up knowing as part of my life, is the lifestyle and maybe educating people on certain aspects they didn't realize were part of the lifestyle.

00:18:36.109 --> 00:18:39.285
And you touch on a major, major factor for me.

00:18:40.780 --> 00:18:48.192
We are absolutely blessed in being able to have very strong supporters, like a Sarah Joy Albrecht.

00:18:48.192 --> 00:18:59.394
With Hold my Guns we're able to bring in people like Walt to talk, which was a very important aspect for me with, early on, rob Peaches bringing in a little star power to kind of swing us.

00:18:59.394 --> 00:19:09.173
He's an extremely busy guy and Gary Glomboski was such a treasure for us to be able to come in and fill that anchor spot at the end with.

00:19:09.173 --> 00:19:31.069
But we wanted to start off because Rob is part of Walt the Talk right, so we wanted to be able to get that established in there and especially with Hold my Guns guns and and probably the best blessing of all, came with a gentleman I met on part of my training team.

00:19:31.089 --> 00:19:56.834
Uh, for the uscc expo I'm I'm contracted out to be a part of a team of instructors from across the country, as far as alaska down here to florida to teach force on force at the expo and one of the people was a published author, um, retired ordained preacher that uh, dr lewis day, and like he was there to help with safety, to help run scenarios and stuff like that.

00:19:56.834 --> 00:20:21.891
But I really think he was placed there for me in a point I needed and our conversations we had it was just like I've never not known this guy and I was like it hit me so hard that I felt like I needed his words, his thoughts on subjects in this magazine, because I felt like our community needed that Right.

00:20:21.891 --> 00:20:30.266
If they're going to take God out of, out of the schools, right, then the then I'm going to put them in in other places.

00:20:30.266 --> 00:20:30.727
You can.

00:20:30.727 --> 00:20:39.690
You can find the words of, of what we have questions on, right, and so the very first thing he's like how does this translate?

00:20:39.690 --> 00:20:41.133
Well, what can I do for you?

00:20:41.133 --> 00:20:43.443
You tell me I will provide right.

00:20:43.443 --> 00:20:45.428
Right, and it was so wide open.

00:20:45.428 --> 00:20:48.874
You're almost like you know where do we start.

00:20:49.420 --> 00:20:51.506
And it was OK.

00:20:51.506 --> 00:20:54.211
I don't know anything about guns.

00:20:54.211 --> 00:20:57.105
I'm scared for my safety.

00:20:57.105 --> 00:20:58.709
What's my first question?

00:20:58.709 --> 00:20:59.852
What is my?

00:20:59.971 --> 00:21:00.713
I'm a Christian.

00:21:00.713 --> 00:21:08.849
What would be my first dilemma and it was something I've heard several times about I don't know if I could take a life, even if it meant mine.

00:21:08.849 --> 00:21:20.405
I've heard that in class several times and what we discussed with that is think about the things you're living for and the things that need you in their life.

00:21:20.405 --> 00:21:27.412
Right, and in those moments I can tell you, you know, darkest hour, it's kind of like being a parent.

00:21:27.412 --> 00:21:28.976
How will I know to do this?

00:21:28.976 --> 00:21:29.970
How will I know this?

00:21:29.970 --> 00:21:37.346
Well, when it all feels like it's falling apart, you're going to know what to do, like just trust yourself, your gut, put your faith in God.

00:21:37.346 --> 00:21:45.653
So we asked that question to Dr Lewis Day Could you address these questions?

00:21:45.653 --> 00:21:55.836
Could you address the people who have this conflict in being a good Christian versus having to possibly take a life in training to have that skill set?

00:21:55.836 --> 00:22:08.896
And it was a great conversation before even turned in the article, just you know we got to look at it is, it's it's early genesis right at its very beginning.

00:22:08.936 --> 00:22:11.868
We've got to look at when cain killed abel.

00:22:11.868 --> 00:22:20.392
The rest of the bible doesn't damn the rock, right, right, it speaks on the evil that that brought that to happen.

00:22:20.392 --> 00:22:23.426
Right, and so that's what you got to look at.

00:22:23.426 --> 00:22:24.690
That's what we're training for.

00:22:24.690 --> 00:22:27.376
That's the realization of what we're doing.

00:22:27.376 --> 00:22:47.455
But on the same fact, we can't get lost in the fact that's all we're doing it for, right, right, sometimes there's a million reasons why we bring in any tool into our world, right, slingshots, bow and arrows, 22s to go plink, to have fun.

00:22:47.455 --> 00:22:53.778
But if it is a dilemma about what I can do in a life or death, yes, we're going to focus on it.

00:22:53.778 --> 00:23:03.079
And every time we have something, some dilemma, some question that pops up, it's like pitching a softball to Dr Louis Day.

00:23:03.079 --> 00:23:04.589
He knocks it out of the park.

00:23:04.589 --> 00:23:10.737
Every time I literally have to have a minute before I email him back after reading this stuff.

00:23:10.737 --> 00:23:24.740
Wow, so like I lead A lot of times, you'll see, in the magazine, especially toward Christmas or when something's really kind of a question in the media we'll lead with his words just to set the tone for the rest of the magazine.

00:23:25.405 --> 00:23:36.713
And now, just like Rob did up till last year and what Gary Blomoski has been able to do since the first issue that dropped with him as our anchor.

00:23:36.713 --> 00:23:41.508
He drives, gary drives at home at the end of the magazine.

00:23:41.508 --> 00:23:44.169
To kind of sum it up as an after action report.

00:23:44.169 --> 00:23:49.893
Before you leave, before we see you next issue, here's some thoughts to go on for the road.

00:23:49.893 --> 00:24:06.815
I really think it starts off with putting everything into context spiritually, having these things flavored in there about discussing you know you're your brother's keeper with like a walk the talk america or with a uh, hold my guns.

00:24:06.815 --> 00:24:14.422
You know how can you help these people are doing, you know the extra mile, how can we help these people out?

00:24:14.422 --> 00:24:19.148
And even reminding people of the people that they're helping.

00:24:19.148 --> 00:24:38.154
You know whether that's Jamie Headley spotlighting some amazing veteran out there that's doing something for the community, or if it is in the survivor stories of hey look, this happened to me, I get it Right, but now this is how I'm helping the community as well, and I think you're right.

00:24:38.255 --> 00:24:47.424
It all ties down and I think as an editor that is my biggest job is to take the line this up in a way, because I have great content.

00:24:47.424 --> 00:24:52.253
I cannot complain one bit about what we get to put in there.

00:24:52.253 --> 00:25:12.226
But for my challenges, to not only represent the writer well by putting it in a well-placed area, but to make it flow and take a reader through page, from front page to in, to cover, to back page adjourned, and and to bring it full circle.

00:25:12.226 --> 00:25:15.794
So thank you very much for saying that you do get that out of it.

00:25:15.794 --> 00:25:17.458
Um, that's just like.

00:25:17.458 --> 00:25:21.767
I've never told anybody like that's my goal, but obviously that is our.

00:25:21.767 --> 00:25:32.512
Our main purpose for me is to take you through that journey and be like all right, that's a, a full circle right, yeah, yeah, it's, it's really.

00:25:32.933 --> 00:25:36.618
No, I've been with you, with you.

00:25:36.618 --> 00:26:19.534
I don't think I subscribed, uh, initially from the first year that you did it, but the had her on on the podcast and we've had the, the walk, the talk, america, the hold my guns, and it's just things that I'm very passionate about because it's the topics that I won't say are taboo, but they're not spoken much of in the industry yeah.

00:26:19.534 --> 00:26:31.345
Okay, so if how many are the episodes, are the magazines?

00:26:31.345 --> 00:26:35.175
Are they backlogged where people can archive?

00:26:36.527 --> 00:26:37.169
We come out.

00:26:37.169 --> 00:26:41.613
We publish a new issue once every two months.

00:26:41.613 --> 00:26:44.404
Ok, and we're not trying to rush the content.

00:26:44.404 --> 00:26:48.911
I want to make sure you're getting a full steak dinner Right With every issue.

00:26:48.911 --> 00:26:57.681
And every issue is available on the Arm Lifestyle magazine dot com on the on the home page.

00:26:57.681 --> 00:27:01.134
You just pick the cover, click on it and start opening up reading it.

00:27:01.134 --> 00:27:20.883
We do reference other issues into it so that from day one we may start off very basic in our articles, but in advance, as each issue goes forward and we'll use, we'll recall the older issues, so you've got to have them available.

00:27:20.883 --> 00:27:21.864
And what we're doing is we'll recall the older issues, so you've got to have them available.

00:27:21.864 --> 00:27:27.247
And what we're doing is we're growing the knowledge base of our readership Right.

00:27:27.247 --> 00:27:39.134
So if something your read seems a little too technical, there will be something in there that says hey, as we explained in issue such and such, and you can go right back in and get caught right back up.

00:27:39.474 --> 00:27:39.736
Okay.

00:27:41.244 --> 00:27:51.688
As you can see, our, our covers range from, you know, christmas guides to veterans to you know, uh, a wide range of things currently on the website.

00:27:51.688 --> 00:27:52.588
I do have to fix.

00:27:52.588 --> 00:27:58.016
Issue one and two are not seen to be able to click on to.

00:27:58.016 --> 00:28:06.255
But if you go to issue three and then click the back module, the back era, it will take you to two and three.

00:28:06.255 --> 00:28:07.711
For some reason it's not showing up.

00:28:08.545 --> 00:28:23.932
We have just now, as of the first of the year, taken over complete layout of everything, so we're still learning this platform, but my wife, candace, is doing an amazing job as layout.

00:28:23.952 --> 00:28:39.550
She has seen some things that, whereas our old layout person did a fantastic job artistically on it, we would have to spend a little time explaining the gun world angle to how we want things to look, because that wasn't her world.

00:28:39.550 --> 00:28:52.955
So, with Candace having been, you know, a firearms instructor for a decade and been shooting in an old school italian family for her entire life, right, she got it and she knew what it needs to look like.

00:28:52.955 --> 00:29:03.664
Um, as well as some organizational things that we're aiming for that necessarily don't fit the standard layout templates right.

00:29:03.664 --> 00:29:07.893
So you'll you'll notice that, starting with the the shot show issue.

00:29:07.893 --> 00:29:09.516
That was two issues ago.

00:29:09.516 --> 00:29:23.066
It does, as you go, have a different feel and a different flow that's more congruent with helping give you, the reader, the overall like environment that we wanted them to be in.

00:29:23.066 --> 00:29:34.601
It looks a little different, it flows a little different and it's literally just like our love letter to the industry and to the lifestyle yeah, okay, all right.

00:29:35.242 --> 00:29:39.653
Uh, is it available just online or is it on Kindle and all that also.

00:29:43.826 --> 00:29:45.188
Currently it is just free online.

00:29:45.188 --> 00:29:57.891
Eventually, what we would like to do would be to partner with somebody to where, like, if you'd like a print version or something like that, or maybe an app.

00:29:57.891 --> 00:30:04.373
We started off as an app when we were under a different publishing house, right, so now we're we're we stripped all that down and we're building back up.

00:30:04.373 --> 00:30:09.936
Um, but I think overall longterm goal is to have something to partner with.

00:30:09.936 --> 00:30:13.933
If you wanted a print version, you can click a button and pay for it.

00:30:13.933 --> 00:30:25.189
But our goal for this is because everybody is an industry um, trained, what I would consider most of them experts in their fields.

00:30:25.189 --> 00:30:32.152
Everybody's an instructor or a doctor or a paramedic or something like that, and they're writing in their lanes of 20 30 years.

00:30:32.152 --> 00:30:37.387
You know, we wanted to make sure this was 100% free.

00:30:37.387 --> 00:30:57.152
It gave them a chance to spotlight their true talents outside the classroom, and a lot of these articles are written to either inform you of what to expect into classrooms, why you would need training and what's available out there, or it's just gap filler between.

00:30:57.231 --> 00:30:58.855
I took a basic pistol class.

00:30:58.855 --> 00:31:04.356
What's next Right?

00:31:04.356 --> 00:31:05.663
What do I need to know next?

00:31:07.666 --> 00:31:16.048
You're 10 times more likely to need a fire extinguisher in your home than a firearm Dan with his paramedic and fire rescue background.

00:31:16.048 --> 00:31:25.940
We talk about these type of things just as much as we do you know situational awareness or mental health aspect of it.

00:31:25.940 --> 00:31:38.494
But I do think the mental health, the first aid, medical, the been there, done that and this is what I carry on my soul every day.

00:31:38.494 --> 00:31:48.875
I really think that's what had been missing from all the other titles I wrote for, for all the other ones I get subscriptions to that come to the house.

00:31:48.875 --> 00:32:09.586
And my goal was to keep this free and maybe to be a shot across the bow of some of the bigger companies that people are paying good money to read and say, hey, look, we're tired of somebody going, I wish somebody would do this, or I hope somebody does this.

00:32:09.586 --> 00:32:11.931
And who's going to do it?

00:32:12.551 --> 00:32:19.250
And biblically, our answer, we found in our heart, was that same answer of who shall we send?

00:32:19.250 --> 00:32:23.286
You know, david said send me lord, right?

00:32:23.286 --> 00:32:25.109
So who's gonna do this?

00:32:25.109 --> 00:32:28.015
And that's us, you know.

00:32:28.015 --> 00:32:46.691
And and with supportive folks like you guys, and you know this is supposed to be an aid for you guys, like, if you'll notice a lot of articles in here are answering the question to the ones you get in the middle of your, your CCW class what about such and such?

00:32:46.691 --> 00:32:49.153
And that answer is always comes in the same place.

00:32:49.153 --> 00:32:53.952
It's always the same questions for every instructor in America and it takes you 20 minutes into the week.

00:32:54.685 --> 00:33:02.807
So, now, if we have a place that you say great question, because I've been waiting for you to ask this like everybody does.

00:33:02.807 --> 00:33:27.708
Let me write down a website, go to issues such and such there's a great article on that and read it and then call me or email me and let's have a discussion on it and we can follow up Moving right along, and that saves you time for 20 minutes in the weeds and it gets you something that a lot of instructors don't have, and that is student retention of them calling you back after one class you're doing.

00:33:27.708 --> 00:33:28.471
Right now.

00:33:28.471 --> 00:33:31.354
You have a way of discussing something with them and going.

00:33:31.354 --> 00:33:33.369
You know we have another class coming up.

00:33:33.369 --> 00:33:48.394
This would be great to explore, right, and so it's an aid for us as the instructors, and just as much as it is the new people coming into our lifestyle and helping them understand this isn't a class, this isn't a hobby.

00:33:49.196 --> 00:33:50.566
Um, the evil that's out.

00:33:50.566 --> 00:33:51.728
There is 24 7.

00:33:51.728 --> 00:33:57.980
How we treat this should be 24 7 and that is part of kind of like.

00:33:57.980 --> 00:33:59.786
You know, it's just like losing weight, right.

00:34:00.145 --> 00:34:04.688
You can't go and crash that 30 days, lose the weight and expect to always be that way.

00:34:04.688 --> 00:34:27.077
You've got to get to a lifestyle and then it changes, right, and so that's kind of the biggest message we have is that this is a lifestyle and you can live it as much as you want or as little as you want, but understand it's the totality of things, that the mental health, the preparedness as well as the skill set it's going to help you get through it.

00:34:27.077 --> 00:34:27.739
Right?

00:34:27.739 --> 00:34:30.559
But, spoiler alert we all die at the end.

00:34:30.559 --> 00:34:32.621
We just trying to prolong that.

00:34:32.621 --> 00:34:33.621
Right yeah.

00:34:34.481 --> 00:34:50.500
OK, and I know that you said the magazine is free, there's no cost to subscribe and to have access to it, and I know you said that a lot of your paid sponsors help alleviate some of those costs.

00:34:50.500 --> 00:34:57.038
Can you tell us a little bit about some of the sponsors that you have that help with your magazine help?

00:34:57.579 --> 00:34:58.280
with your magazine.

00:35:01.625 --> 00:35:11.992
We've been very blessed with having sponsors come in and either pay for advertising or they're sending us products or reviews on a regular basis or they're helping us with events or helping us get to events or stuff like that.

00:35:12.204 --> 00:35:21.864
So you know, we've got some really good friends in the industry, like Clint Macro and Matt Mallory, with the Meat Depressorsors, you know, with their ads in there.

00:35:21.864 --> 00:35:42.688
But also we, you know we give back to community as well with doing spots for like hold my guns, and those organizations as well, but you know, vortex Optics, henry, pete and Arms those guys have been absolutely amazing to us and and, like I said, we all have our own businesses, so we're we're.

00:35:42.688 --> 00:35:45.137
That's a good place for us to put those as well.

00:35:45.137 --> 00:35:57.451
Um, and then regularly there's just different segments and different availabilities um for people to come in for like one issue or like a three issue or or yearly thing.

00:35:57.451 --> 00:36:16.648
Um with like modern spartan systems and and start next level training group to come in and really help us out when we need it and give us that extra push and to share with their on their platforms as well and help us grow that base I mean I think we're hovering at about 35 000 people right now.

00:36:16.889 --> 00:36:23.432
I know paid publications that are hoping to get to that at this point, and especially with this world right now.

00:36:23.565 --> 00:36:27.175
What I find ironic is that we've been in this space.

00:36:27.175 --> 00:36:34.637
We got the green light in 2020, and then we went out on our own on issue three.

00:36:34.637 --> 00:36:37.795
We launched the first issue in 2022.

00:36:37.795 --> 00:36:59.045
Obviously, green light to going live in 2022, a lot of it had to do with COVID and that area still coming out of that, getting the sponsorships, getting the organization, and you know, if it weren't for people like, obviously, my wife, who was the first person to be like, this is something you need to do right.

00:36:59.065 --> 00:36:59.987
This is something I'd been had in my heart and you need to do right.

00:36:59.987 --> 00:37:04.356
This is something I've been, uh, had in my heart and really wanted to do as a passion project.

00:37:04.356 --> 00:37:13.344
And as soon as I put it out there and shop just an idea, wanting people to tell me I'm just stupid, just why on the hell would you do this?

00:37:13.344 --> 00:37:31.811
Uh, as soon as I did that, like I had some really good people jump on board with that, okay, and some people that I really admired for a while, uh, doing things that I had, you know, in the same, in the same circles in the industry, but our circles hadn't met yet.

00:37:32.193 --> 00:37:32.514
Okay.

00:37:33.106 --> 00:37:53.090
So it allowed me to to reach out with people like Amy Lucas, right, and then through that I met our assistant editor, to be um, jamie Henley, who was her partner in still in stilettos which their friend was Charlie cook, which I had been watching his stuff forever and I was, like you can get me in touch with Charlie.

00:37:53.090 --> 00:37:54.153
This is awesome.

00:37:54.153 --> 00:37:59.637
You know not that, not to even realize that Charlie's just like a everyday dude.

00:37:59.965 --> 00:38:09.730
I should have just called him, right, like I was just thinking no he's not gonna take my call right, but you know we had some really good people come on board at the time.

00:38:09.730 --> 00:38:28.525
Um, my usccrf at that point was dan and so he obviously he wanted to be a part of that, just through what he was doing, and it just stayed Like Dan wound up, you know, outside of USCCA, becoming our instructor and then our writer.

00:38:28.525 --> 00:38:37.800
So it was like these people gravitated to it, not for who I am in the industry, but because they believed in that mission.

00:38:37.800 --> 00:38:44.269
You know, we wound up getting an Aaron Cobb, we wound up getting a John Petralini, yeah, those type guys.

00:38:44.269 --> 00:38:51.518
And it was like every day I'd open my email and it's like, hey, we'd like to be a part of this.

00:38:51.518 --> 00:38:52.750
I really like your mission.

00:38:52.750 --> 00:38:55.393
I'm like I'm taking contributions.

00:38:55.644 --> 00:38:57.083
You know, that's all I can say at this point.

00:38:58.128 --> 00:39:04.333
It's free publication, so it's what it is, but they were really, they were really moved by.

00:39:04.333 --> 00:39:06.137
This is different.

00:39:06.137 --> 00:39:09.394
Like this is what's needed.

00:39:09.394 --> 00:39:20.188
It's not a gun industry, it's a armed lifestyle, and we even preface right there, page one issue one Armed is not about a tool.

00:39:20.188 --> 00:39:41.474
Armed is between the ears of being mentally prepared and mentally stable, mentally capable of training, understanding what the threat is and what we want out of the tools that we're using, and so I think that is the core thing that we're always trying to reinforce.

00:39:41.474 --> 00:39:47.340
Does this issue reinforce this mentally armed lifestyle?

00:39:47.800 --> 00:39:54.012
And does it benefit it Right, and so that's just everybody who's been on board.

00:39:54.012 --> 00:40:09.759
This has just become a passion project for people who are at a level that they can do this and donate that time and effort for them, and the reward has been meeting some amazing readers and instructors.

00:40:09.759 --> 00:40:12.974
They read it at all our events shot show.

00:40:12.974 --> 00:40:14.469
I run into people all the time.

00:40:14.469 --> 00:40:17.192
They're like hey, I know you Awesome issue.

00:40:17.192 --> 00:40:29.911
We were signing hats and T-shirts at USCCA Expo up in Wisconsin after each Force on Force class Right Taking pictures and stuff like that.

00:40:29.911 --> 00:40:35.775
I know some of our writers at SHOT Show this January taking pictures of people stopping going.

00:40:35.775 --> 00:40:38.460
I really like your article and such and such right.

00:40:39.925 --> 00:40:41.168
And so you know it's fun.

00:40:41.168 --> 00:41:09.601
But it's really cool to meet people that you would have never met if it wasn't for they read what you had to say first and you've touched them in some way, and that's truly what we're after is reaching out and not just trying to throw information out on the wall and see what sticks, but truly do something in an effort to build our community stronger and to help everybody know we're all a part of the same one, right?

00:41:09.601 --> 00:41:14.139
Whether you don't like this or you do like this, we're all a part of an armed lifestyle.

00:41:14.521 --> 00:41:17.083
Right, right, okay, all right.

00:41:17.083 --> 00:41:29.733
So anything big up and coming that Swanson Media is wanting to do or involve in the magazine, or what are your future goals for?

00:41:31.186 --> 00:42:15.461
Ultimately, we would like to be able to probably venture into possibly the world of not for profit and bring in all of our trainers, experts and possibly some community events around the country so that we're allowed to be able to take donations to be able to fund some of these pop-up trainings through the media, as well as some donors and stuff like that Right Through the media, as well as some donors and stuff like that, and take this off the page and into your local range at no cost to the range or the instructor and just 100 percent benefit the community themselves and let some of these people get FaceTime with instructors that they may have read but didn't realize are in their backyard.

00:42:21.224 --> 00:42:24.918
Maybe they can't afford to go to their trainings or maybe don't have the opportunities to go to a full day training but maybe three hours on a saturday.

00:42:24.918 --> 00:42:26.804
The range donates the time we're bringing.

00:42:26.804 --> 00:42:42.052
We're getting donors to sponsor the ammo or targets or whatever and to be able to do simple things that maybe we've pointed out throughout the years doing the magazine different drills and stuff like that.

00:42:42.052 --> 00:43:07.711
I know we just had John Colas on with his pistol practice book and we featured some of the stuff with that We've been talking with him about maybe doing something to offer a couple of drills per issue, going forward, Um, and really transcend this from just written word and making this applicable, living, breathing lifestyle for everyone.

00:43:08.474 --> 00:43:20.351
Okay, sounds awesome, I'm I'm anxious to see, see all this uh progress and uh come to fruition and uh, I like everything that you're talking about, trampas.

00:43:20.351 --> 00:43:32.300
So again, if somebody was wanting to sign up to get notified, how would they sign up for notifications or get access to the magazine?

00:43:32.940 --> 00:43:33.280
Okay.

00:43:33.300 --> 00:43:35.521
So they go to armlifestylemagazinecom.

00:43:35.521 --> 00:43:40.708
They'll go straight up to the top.

00:43:40.708 --> 00:43:55.393
It says read about subscribe and then it's our link to our um our Facebook and our um Instagram and all you have to do is click subscribe, add in their email address and every time we drop a new issue the link to it will be right there in their email.

00:43:55.393 --> 00:43:56.615
They'll get notified.

00:43:56.615 --> 00:43:59.373
They don't need to check back each issue or check our social media.

00:43:59.373 --> 00:44:02.233
We do drop little hints.

00:44:02.233 --> 00:44:05.958
We do drop little descriptions of things to expect.

00:44:06.902 --> 00:44:18.257
We also are co-branded with our Swanson Training Group for free little one-hour monthly seminars that we'll drop with guests each month.

00:44:18.257 --> 00:44:22.992
Uh, when we schedule those, those will be like top trainers they'll be.

00:44:22.992 --> 00:44:32.822
We've had julie gullo from um team smith and wesson had people from uh liberty safes, um authors of various different books.

00:44:32.822 --> 00:44:35.610
I can fill a library with how many authors we've had on there.

00:44:35.610 --> 00:44:40.871
Um, and we're again, like I said, ninth degree black belt.

00:44:40.871 --> 00:44:42.695
Uh, martial arts hall of famer.

00:44:42.695 --> 00:44:52.369
Gary glomboski is going to be on on the 21st, so they can check out um either the posting on uscca or our link on the swanson training group on facebook.

00:44:52.369 --> 00:44:55.574
So we're we're very active on those links as well.

00:44:55.574 --> 00:45:12.715
Um, so, although you're getting the email for each issue, don't forget to follow those uh Instagram and email or those Instagram and Facebook accounts for extra bonus stuff, videos and whatnot as well, and not in training opportunities.

00:45:13.085 --> 00:45:16.775
Okay, all right, sounds good, and throw a plug out there for you too.

00:45:16.775 --> 00:45:31.929
If anybody's interested in some of your training with the Swanson training group, you know you go ahead and give them their your website there if you want to and know, maybe talk about a few of the courses that you you offer that are your, your co-branded courses.

00:45:31.929 --> 00:45:32.931
Co-branded courses.

00:45:33.811 --> 00:45:34.431
Absolutely so.

00:45:34.431 --> 00:45:40.137
We have the SwansonTrainingGroupnet is our website.

00:45:40.137 --> 00:45:43.340
We do a lot of stuff social media-wise.

00:45:43.340 --> 00:45:53.148
I don't get to update as much as I want on the website, but we are posting all of our NRA and USCCA stuff on the USCCA platform as well.

00:45:53.148 --> 00:45:58.639
I am a training counselor for both the NRA and the USCCA as well as an instructor.

00:45:59.099 --> 00:46:55.501
So if somebody is brand new to shooting, if they want to get their kids involved, if they want to do couples only trainings and one on ones, we offer force on force set up for a video simulator so we're able to take them from basic uh training skills to stuff you can't learn on a live fire uh, flat range like moving targets, shoot, no shoots and stuff like that, and we bring that up to video scenarios and reactions that we can control on our pc when they're ready for that, then we'll load up airsoft or UTM and we'll go out and we'll do force on force, forces To where you guys can see is exactly what it feels like, sounds like, in the middle of those split second decision making type of instances, as well as as you grow some of your training and upon your journey.

00:46:56.347 --> 00:47:00.469
We've been very honored to see people flow through their journey.

00:47:00.469 --> 00:47:07.170
We have about 42 classes that we offer throughout each year, uh, between six different instructors.

00:47:07.170 --> 00:47:22.092
Um, we have been very fortunate to have people start their their journey and then wind up in one of our USCCA or NRA classes as far as basic classes, and then go on to be in our instructor certification classes.

00:47:22.092 --> 00:47:36.251
We have people from all over the country, as far as California, nevada, ohio, indiana come to Jacksonville, florida, to do our instructor classes.

00:47:36.251 --> 00:47:49.195
Tons of great TCs out there, but when you have a magazine that they can read, your thought process and your view of the industry, a lot of them have been inspired enough to make that trip to Florida.

00:47:49.195 --> 00:47:51.032
Who doesn't want to come to Florida right?

00:47:52.925 --> 00:48:05.335
And then you also do training, because you do have a bingo up in South Carolina, and then you've got the Las Vegas part of it as well so we're currently in instructor in transition in Vegas.

00:48:05.684 --> 00:48:16.460
We have been going South Carolina right now, right off the back gate of Parris Island as well as we're hosted at 17 South Range in Georgia.

00:48:16.460 --> 00:48:18.612
So we do a lot of training up there.

00:48:18.612 --> 00:48:29.530
We have one of the top five defensive shotgun classes in the country and so they're like, when you do those, we want them here and they've been sellouts.

00:48:29.530 --> 00:48:39.255
We do them in the spring, obviously, and we do them in the late fall and everyone's been a sellout, so hopefully we'll have one in your, your backyard this fall.

00:48:39.585 --> 00:48:47.016
Yeah, we're, we're working on it and I'm anxious to to get that up and going, but I appreciate your time today.

00:48:47.016 --> 00:48:56.916
Trampas, final question I didn't preface you on this, but what do you do for relaxation from your day-to-day activities?

00:48:58.599 --> 00:48:59.219
Range therapy.

00:48:59.219 --> 00:49:04.114
Seriously, sometimes we just unplug.

00:49:04.114 --> 00:49:05.710
Like I said, I have two little girls.

00:49:05.710 --> 00:49:06.989
They're Disney fanatics.

00:49:06.989 --> 00:49:18.628
We're about two and a half hours from Orlando, so every six or seven weeks we just completely unplug and go throw some money at the mouse in Disney, right, we just completely unplug and go throw some money at the mouse in Disney.

00:49:18.628 --> 00:49:18.768
Right.

00:49:18.768 --> 00:49:24.597
That we travel around a little bit for their competitions and stuff and we make them big family events.

00:49:25.677 --> 00:49:33.199
None of this would be possible if this wasn't an all-in all four members of the family lifestyle, right.

00:49:33.199 --> 00:49:56.293
They have grown up in seeing mom and dad volunteer just as much as get paid and see how that benefits their community and all the amazing positive people that they look at as role models in their life, and so everything's an opportunity to not only learn but to grow our family stronger, and even at Disney we're talking about situational awareness and things like that.

00:49:56.293 --> 00:50:03.826
Everything's an opportunity to not only learn but to grow our family stronger, and even at Disney we're talking about situational awareness and things like that when we're out on the road, like Texas.

00:50:03.826 --> 00:50:13.425
We just came from California where they did fantastic in their GTMA martial arts tournaments and then we spent the weekend at Disneyland, right, so it's.

00:50:13.525 --> 00:50:17.757
It's a great way to unwind, but we never slip out of kitchen yet, right, right.

00:50:17.757 --> 00:50:21.474
So it's, it's a great way to unwind, but we never slip out of kitchen yet, right, right, we never slip out of this.

00:50:21.474 --> 00:50:23.764
Stay tuned in their area.

00:50:23.764 --> 00:50:37.550
So relax for us has a little bit different meaning of still being tuned in and ready, right, but it balances itself out and when you love what you do and it's a true passion, there's no real stressful day.

00:50:37.550 --> 00:50:39.438
It really isn't, yeah.

00:50:39.840 --> 00:50:40.782
Okay, all right.

00:50:40.782 --> 00:50:49.775
Well, again, I thank you for being a part of this today and uh look forward to I know we have spoken before about maybe coming back to on some other topics.

00:50:49.775 --> 00:50:59.920
Uh, as well as I've had some other guests that are like Matt Mallory is going to be coming back to talk about less lethal and uh some more on some prepping.

00:50:59.920 --> 00:51:11.768
That uh he's done and uh I just look forward to having you back and getting involved uh with uh partnering with you for some training to you know, for for me and my uh David.

00:51:11.768 --> 00:51:14.175
Uh you know kind of help.

00:51:14.175 --> 00:51:17.773
You know, keep that uh that instructor development going.

00:51:19.416 --> 00:51:19.898
Absolutely.

00:51:19.898 --> 00:51:21.269
Thank you very much for having me.

00:51:21.269 --> 00:51:21.891
I enjoyed it.

00:51:22.273 --> 00:51:24.009
All right, I appreciate your time, trampas.

00:51:24.009 --> 00:51:24.570
Thank you, sir.

00:51:24.570 --> 00:51:26.536
Yes, sir, y'all have a good day.
