So stay tuned and listen to today's episode.
00:00:33.576 --> 00:00:39.551

00:00:43.182 --> 00:00:53.792
Hi, welcome to the Armed Guardian Podcast.
00:00:53.792 --> 00:00:54.814
I'm your host, brian.
00:00:54.814 --> 00:00:58.216
Today we're with Robin Sandoval from A Girl and a Gun.
00:00:58.216 --> 00:01:09.822
She's going to talk to us about the Girl and a Gun program.
00:01:09.822 --> 00:01:14.656
Tell us what it is and how it can help you as a lady to become a better shooter, make connections and all things involved with Girl and a Gun.
00:01:14.656 --> 00:01:16.081
How are you doing today, robin?
00:01:16.902 --> 00:01:18.364
Hi Brian, Thank you for having me.
00:01:18.364 --> 00:01:19.123
I'm doing great.
00:01:20.046 --> 00:01:28.436
Okay, so for people that may not know who Robin Sandoval is, can you give us a brief intro or bio to Robin Sandoval?
00:01:29.581 --> 00:01:34.653
Well, I am the president and CEO of A Girl and a Gun.
00:01:35.361 --> 00:01:36.103
I'm a mom.
00:01:36.185 --> 00:01:36.727
I'm a wife.
00:01:36.727 --> 00:01:43.040
I dedicate my life to teaching women and families the safe and proficient use of firearms.
00:01:43.040 --> 00:01:46.888
I do a lot of advocacy in the Second Amendment field, but I wasn't always that way.
00:01:46.888 --> 00:02:09.844
I was a strong anti-gunner for most of my life, and when I became a gun owner, it opened a world that I never knew existed, and so now I'm fortunate to accompany a lot of women and families in their journey to learn about firearms, to learn about the opportunities for training, to learn about all the fun that we have on the range and all the activities that we have, and so that's that's what I do my life.
00:02:09.844 --> 00:02:11.288
In a nutshell, I'm an instructor.
00:02:11.288 --> 00:02:16.991
I'm certified by a number of academies, I train regularly, I host a lot of trainings, I teach a lot.
00:02:16.991 --> 00:02:19.122
I really have.
00:02:19.122 --> 00:02:21.490
The best job in the world is really what it comes down to.
00:02:22.461 --> 00:02:46.849
That's great, that's awesome, and it's interesting that you mentioned, for those that may not know about yourself and your background, that you were that anti-gun and that you've become more, you've become pro-gun now and that you've had that change, change of of heart.
00:02:46.849 --> 00:03:05.233
I guess it is that no but thoughts, and it's uh interesting to see people that you know turn over a new leaf and you know see things from a different perspective and then they become attached to it and, you know, become a proponent for for what they were against avidly in the past.
00:03:05.233 --> 00:03:10.687
So, uh, great bio, great introduction and uh, we'll go off.
00:03:10.687 --> 00:03:14.729
Uh, first question we had is uh, what is the girl in a gun program?
00:03:16.112 --> 00:03:35.302
So Actually that's kind of a too brief of an outline.
00:03:35.302 --> 00:03:42.400
So not only do we introduce new shooters to shooting, but we give advanced shooters opportunities that keep them in the game, honing their skills.
00:03:42.400 --> 00:03:48.175
And that really is what makes Girl and the Gun unique, is that we focus on all life cycles of the shooter, the entire journey.
00:03:48.175 --> 00:03:52.788
We do defense, competition, pretty much, if you think it, we do it.
00:03:52.788 --> 00:04:00.007
We do all platforms, all types of shooting, recreational, educational lots of different events.
00:04:00.007 --> 00:04:10.454
So we have, on the local level, we have chapters that are running our events, and then I am fortunate to get to host Girls Night Outs, girls Getaways, destination events.
00:04:10.454 --> 00:04:13.931
So ladies come with me and we go and do some really amazing things.
00:04:14.460 --> 00:04:18.250
So last week, for example, I was in Virginia hosting our vehicle CQB course.
00:04:18.250 --> 00:04:22.050
I had 40 ladies out there with me at the Virginia International Raceway.
00:04:22.050 --> 00:04:30.947
We were doing all things moving, shooting around vehicles, through vehicles, learning how to protect yourself in a parking lot, parking garages, any of those transitional spaces that involve vehicles.
00:04:30.947 --> 00:04:33.723
So we're doing a lot of shooting in and around the car.
00:04:33.723 --> 00:04:53.173
And then we're also addressing some non-lethal options that are helpful in a parking lot, like pepper spray and situational awareness, verbal de-escalation, and then we of course went on the racetrack and learned evasive driving, rollover recovery, off-road recovery, drifting, skid maneuvers and that kind of stuff too.
00:04:53.173 --> 00:04:55.675
So those are the fun things that I get to do.
00:04:55.675 --> 00:05:03.062
I thought you know I want to learn this stuff and maybe other women do too.
00:05:03.062 --> 00:05:04.745
So I put it together and we just hosted our third Drift Academy.
00:05:04.745 --> 00:05:15.250
Drift is a play on words because we are drifting on the skid pad, but it also stands for Dynamic, real World, immersive Firearms Training, so it's an acronym for all of the vehicles CQB that we do.
00:05:15.250 --> 00:05:17.466
So we host that event twice a year.
00:05:17.466 --> 00:05:33.987
We also host a Glock Armors course twice a year where I take a group of girls to Glock, the Glock Professional HQ in Smyrna, georgia, and the Glock instructors roll out the red carpet for our girls, and I'm really proud that we've certified more than 200 armorers in the past couple of years.
00:05:35.050 --> 00:05:40.911
Back in the day when I first was curious about running an armorers course, I just didn't see a lot of women doing it.
00:05:40.911 --> 00:05:48.605
I saw mostly guys were the tinkerers and doing repairs and gunsmithing, and so I thought, well, what if women have the opportunity?
00:05:48.605 --> 00:05:52.843
So our friends at Glock, like I said, they roll out the red carpet for us.
00:05:52.843 --> 00:05:55.603
So we've gone for many years out to Glock, so we do that twice a year.
00:05:55.603 --> 00:06:12.656
We also host a sniper school for ladies that want to learn how to shoot over a mile and a half away and wear concealment and ghillie suits and understand the concepts of concealment and, um, you know those kinds of ballistics and math if you, if that interests you.
00:06:12.656 --> 00:06:14.826
We just make it fun and approachable.
00:06:14.946 --> 00:06:16.810
So we have a lot of different events.
00:06:16.850 --> 00:06:21.300
Of course we have the only all ladies three gun match in the nation, which is our fall fest.
00:06:21.300 --> 00:06:26.459
That is uh, it actually comprises three separate events all rolled into one.
00:06:26.459 --> 00:06:29.970
So we have 3GUN University for ladies who want to learn the sport of 3GUN.
00:06:29.970 --> 00:06:41.769
They may have competed in other sports like IDPA, uspsa or, you know, asi or any of the others, but they maybe don't have the experience with 3GUN or they would just want to hone their 3GUN skills and run the game better.
00:06:41.769 --> 00:06:45.035
So we have 3-game university for three days prior to the event.
00:06:45.035 --> 00:06:50.309
And then we have a one-day team pistol challenge, which is so fun if you've never shot a team pistol match.
00:06:50.309 --> 00:07:11.430
It's a two-girl team, two-woman team and you wear costumes and it's silly and you know you shoot the red ones, she shoots the blue ones, or you tag team, or sometimes you're tethered and it's six stages of just lots of fun, and so we always have really fun names and costumes, like we have Wilma and Betty and Thelma and Louise and you know all these really fun names.
00:07:11.610 --> 00:07:12.213
It's a lot of fun.
00:07:12.213 --> 00:07:17.552
And then we of course have our three-day three-gun match, our two-day three-gun match, which is all natural terrain.
00:07:17.552 --> 00:07:32.940
So we're really fortunate that Mr Lucas owns Lucas Oil and he has his private ranch where he has retired to, and it has a guest lodge and some berms, and so he lets us, he welcomes us, to his home, basically, and so we're really fortunate.
00:07:32.940 --> 00:07:40.910
We have the best supporters in the industry, we have great relationships with our sponsors, and so we're able to do really incredible things.
00:07:40.910 --> 00:07:44.581
And I'm, like I said before, I have the best job in the world.
00:07:44.723 --> 00:07:49.827
And and so for women who, on the local level, just want to learn some basic marksmanship, we got you.
00:07:49.827 --> 00:07:54.629
For ladies who want to learn some advanced marksmanship, we got you.
00:07:54.629 --> 00:08:08.387
And then for those who want to just get out their comfort zone and come meet other women and travel and learn new skills and dive into something totally different, it's a really great way for them to come and know that you're going to meet friends.
00:08:08.387 --> 00:08:10.471
You're not going to be, you know.
00:08:10.471 --> 00:08:18.586
If you come with a girlfriend, that's great, but if you just come alone, you're going to leave with 40 new girlfriends, or 700 new girlfriends if you come to conference.
00:08:18.586 --> 00:08:28.891
So we do a lot of things to make sure that we nurture those relationships so that everyone feels welcome and it's a really safe place to kind of just jump into, even if you don't know anybody.
00:08:28.891 --> 00:08:31.355
So we have a lot of really fun opportunities like that.
00:08:32.760 --> 00:08:42.633
Okay, yeah, you froze up for about the first minute with the intro into it, but I think we got the gist of what the overall program is.
00:08:42.633 --> 00:08:53.773
And I like the program because it does focus or does cater to women, and that's the majority of the new gun owners out there and, uh, a lot of women.
00:08:53.773 --> 00:09:10.220
They may not like to take a, uh, co-ed class because of their fear of not knowing a lot about guns or, you know, just being brand new and afraid that they'll be in the class of someone that's got a little bit more knowledge, experience.
00:09:10.220 --> 00:09:40.216
And I really applaud, especially in some of the competition that you do with the three gun and stuff like that, that it encourages women to be comfortable in atmosphere of other like-minded women and, you know it does foster those friendships and lifelong skills that you know you learn that you need being a firearms owner, concealed carrier.
00:09:41.581 --> 00:09:47.552
Yeah, there's a lot of great training out there that is available to women if you know where to look for it.
00:09:47.552 --> 00:09:57.095
But a lot of times just the intimidation factor of walking into that gun range or walking into that gun store can be really frightening for someone to feel like they're going in a place where they don't belong.
00:09:57.095 --> 00:10:09.316
So just by having a girl in a gun banner on the wall, you know that you're welcome, you know there's people who understand you, that they'll speak your language, they're not going to talk down to you, that they really want the best for you and can give you those opportunities.
00:10:09.316 --> 00:10:13.048
And at a girl and again I'm really fortunate.
00:10:13.048 --> 00:10:17.749
Only do we have great sponsors, but just within our organization we have really talented instructors.
00:10:17.749 --> 00:10:24.128
So to be a facilitator, to run a chapter, to be part of our organization, you have to have a compilation of credentials.
00:10:24.128 --> 00:10:30.663
So all of our instructors are incredibly skilled.
00:10:30.663 --> 00:10:31.846
They have a professional resume that's incredibly long.
00:10:31.846 --> 00:10:34.211
They've really put in the time and their training and we require that of them.
00:10:34.312 --> 00:10:42.461
All of our instructors have passed the FBI call at 90%, which is what Plain Coast Federal Officer has to pass it at.
00:10:42.461 --> 00:10:43.964
So we have very high standards.
00:10:43.964 --> 00:10:46.989
They have to call on that annually, every other year.
00:10:46.989 --> 00:10:50.313
So we know that our girls can walk the walk.
00:10:50.313 --> 00:10:51.562
We know that they can talk the talk.
00:10:51.562 --> 00:10:53.587
They are good shooters, they are good communicators.
00:10:53.587 --> 00:11:00.986
So it's a really great place to go and make sure that you're learning from someone who's credentialed, that you're learning from someone who can speak your language and you're welcome.
00:11:00.986 --> 00:11:07.024
There's a community there to support you, that they have the knowledge and depth of understanding and that they're teaching you the right way.
00:11:07.024 --> 00:11:10.791
So all of those things are values that we have that we hit on regularly.
00:11:10.791 --> 00:11:17.245
We have a cadre of instructors that is 300 instructors, all females, all highly credentialed.
00:11:17.245 --> 00:11:20.626
We're really paving the way for women in this industry.
00:11:21.128 --> 00:11:23.393
Okay, all right, well, that's good.
00:11:23.393 --> 00:11:34.201
Next question I noticed on your website whenever I was going through trying to gather up questions and everything what are the goals of the program?
00:11:34.201 --> 00:11:37.668
The four pillars I saw on the website.
00:11:37.668 --> 00:11:38.610
What's those?
00:11:39.351 --> 00:11:39.611
Yeah.
00:11:39.611 --> 00:11:43.607
So our pillars are education, recreation, competition and community.
00:11:43.607 --> 00:11:47.926
So everything we do, we try to incorporate those aspects into our events.
00:11:47.926 --> 00:12:01.283
So whether you just want to come hang out with the girls and get out of the house and do something different, whether you want to be educated on the firearm, whether you want to do competition or you're just shooting for fun, we really try to incorporate all of those values.
00:12:01.283 --> 00:12:06.703
So if you're a defender, a competitor or just want to come hang out, a girl and a gun is for you.
00:12:07.245 --> 00:12:09.048
Okay, all right, that sounds good.
00:12:09.048 --> 00:12:12.121
What are some of the events you have?
00:12:12.121 --> 00:12:29.004
I know we kind of briefly talked about the Drift Academy and things like that, but are there any others that either that you're currently doing or that you're maybe looking to add on in the future, or anything with your events?
00:12:29.785 --> 00:12:30.006
Yes.
00:12:30.006 --> 00:12:37.859
So our biggest event of the year is our national conference that we have 700 students, 150 staff with sponsors and everyone on site.
00:12:37.859 --> 00:12:40.847
We have about a thousand people there all dedicated to training.
00:12:40.847 --> 00:12:47.480
So it's really fantastic, to training.
00:12:47.480 --> 00:12:48.062
So it's really fantastic.
00:12:48.081 --> 00:12:51.789
And that is held every year in and in April in Colorado and then coming up next month we're hosting our clays extravaganza.
00:12:51.789 --> 00:12:52.692
So that's all shotguns.
00:12:52.692 --> 00:13:01.804
So for all of our girls who are in a seat and registered, it is a registered shoot so you can get punches towards your rankings and in a CA.
00:13:01.804 --> 00:13:13.442
And so if you don't know shotgun sports, you don't know trap, or we're not doing trap this time, so it's not an SDA event, but we are doing sporting, clays, super sporting and five stand.
00:13:13.442 --> 00:13:22.851
So if you're not familiar with the those, the rules of those sports, or if you just want some good shotgun training, we always try to incorporate clinics into everything we do.
00:13:22.851 --> 00:13:26.149
So, just like learning the sport of three gun, we have three gun university.
00:13:26.149 --> 00:13:36.634
Before our clays extravaganza we have a day of clinics so ladies can come and get training from NSCA instructors and learn some shotgun skills and help them break those clays.
00:13:36.634 --> 00:13:39.168
So everything we do is to set people up for success.
00:13:39.168 --> 00:13:41.528
We really want to build confidence and build people up.
00:13:42.059 --> 00:13:44.067
Okay, all right, that's great.
00:13:44.067 --> 00:13:47.061
Confidence.
00:13:47.061 --> 00:13:48.243
And build people up Okay, all right, that's great.
00:13:48.243 --> 00:13:58.392
And another thing with the, the shooting events that you do know it is a little bit of a competition, but it's no, you don't have to become a seasoned competitive shooter to become a member, to participate.
00:13:58.673 --> 00:14:14.791
Uh, and I tell people at our local gun club that I'm a member of, cause I do some of the events, that at our local gun club that I'm a member of, because I do some of the events that, no, we don't care if it's your first shoot, uh or no, you're just interested in learning the different defensive pistol, bullseye, pistol.
00:14:14.791 --> 00:14:16.274
Come out, have fun.
00:14:16.274 --> 00:14:18.326
That's, that's what we want to do.
00:14:18.326 --> 00:14:25.600
And our, our club, our club motto for our club is pass it on, talking about passing it on to the future generations.
00:14:25.600 --> 00:14:35.403
And I really push the you know, try and expanding your, your knowledge, your, you know, try something new that you haven't shot.
00:14:35.403 --> 00:14:44.830
But for whether you know you you're just typically shooting pistol or maybe you're into just a rifle, try, try the opposite a little bit.
00:14:44.830 --> 00:14:49.105
And, uh, but yeah, you don't have to be a seasoned competitive shooter, do you?
00:14:50.109 --> 00:14:51.153
No, not at all.
00:14:51.153 --> 00:14:51.554
We have.
00:14:51.554 --> 00:14:55.205
Uh, we have a lot of different opportunities for people to learn competition.
00:14:55.205 --> 00:15:03.352
Competition is great for defensive skills too, because it gives you a baseline and when you see what fast is now, you can know how you want to push yourself.
00:15:03.352 --> 00:15:11.524
How you want to uh, you know reduce your split times, know how you want to push yourself, how you want to uh, you know, reduce your split times and how you want to get on target faster, and you know all of those things that you want to do defensively.
00:15:11.524 --> 00:15:19.227
But you can really learn and hone them through competition so they really do marry well, um, it is a game, so it's a sport, it's fun.
00:15:19.227 --> 00:15:22.701
Uh, gamers are going to game, but it's still at the end of the day.
00:15:22.701 --> 00:15:35.561
A lot of those skills cross over and you can do a lot of really good work with just repetition and work in your pistol, getting your skills there, you know, honing those neural pathways so that you're faster and more accurate each time.
00:15:35.561 --> 00:15:40.897
But you're right, everything we do is allows people a gateway, really.
00:15:41.017 --> 00:15:45.230
So on the local level, we have a quarterly match, which is a simple course of fire.
00:15:45.230 --> 00:15:47.004
It's three strings, it's very simple.
00:15:47.004 --> 00:15:48.386
It can happen at any range.
00:15:48.386 --> 00:15:52.962
It can happen indoor, outdoor, you know from the bench.
00:15:52.962 --> 00:15:56.952
It's super easy and it allows ladies an introduction into competition.
00:15:56.952 --> 00:16:01.864
So a lot of people will think, oh, I could never compete, that's too serious, it's too too much pressure.
00:16:01.864 --> 00:16:05.580
But once you understand, this is just a drill, it's just a simple course of fire.
00:16:05.580 --> 00:16:13.225
You know, you shoot it, you show clear and that's it.
00:16:13.225 --> 00:16:14.126
We log your time.
00:16:14.126 --> 00:16:24.302
So it's a really great introduction to competition because now you're realizing, oh, I'm learning range commands, I'm learning how to run a shot timer, I'm learning scoring, I'm working a little bit faster.
00:16:25.755 --> 00:16:33.264
But our quarterly match is a really great way because you're doing it locally, with your friends, in your regular range, doing all the same things you normally do.
00:16:33.264 --> 00:16:40.962
It's just a simple course of fire but it does give you a baseline and a place to start and some familiarity with the lingo and how a competition works.
00:16:40.962 --> 00:16:47.602
So that's something I'm really proud of that we do nationwide and it allows people to see on the leaderboard how they stack up nationwide.
00:16:47.602 --> 00:16:54.623
And we have it divided into color tracks, which is our girl in the gun way of kind of dividing people based on experience and skill sets.
00:16:54.623 --> 00:17:03.280
So you are competing about against in the same division with people who are similarly new or similarly experienced as you.
00:17:03.280 --> 00:17:08.742
So it does give you kind of a good baseline to see where you are, and every so often it's pretty fun to check in on that.
00:17:08.742 --> 00:17:09.767
So we do that quarterly.
00:17:10.255 --> 00:17:11.156
Okay, all right.
00:17:11.156 --> 00:17:20.282
So I was looking through some of your programs and one that piqued my interest was your giving back program.
00:17:20.282 --> 00:17:22.347
Want to tell people a little bit about that.
00:17:24.016 --> 00:17:29.922
Yeah, our giving back program is really just a heart mission of a way that we can make a difference in our communities.
00:17:29.922 --> 00:17:34.719
There's a lot of really great charities that our chapters participate in Throughout the year.
00:17:34.719 --> 00:17:36.082
There's a lot of charitable giving.
00:17:36.082 --> 00:17:40.618
Our biggest one nationally would be our Back the Women in Blue program.
00:17:40.618 --> 00:17:43.467
So once a year we invite law enforcement women to come.
00:17:43.467 --> 00:17:49.175
They come here locally to me in Austin, texas, and we give them really incredible three days of training.
00:17:49.175 --> 00:17:57.204
You know, when we started that program I think about eight years ago I was hesitant because I thought we're a commercial organization, we're civilians.
00:17:57.204 --> 00:18:00.175
How can we benefit these law enforcement officers?
00:18:00.175 --> 00:18:05.579
But what I realized, and the reason why we were encouraged to do it, is so often they're not getting the training they need.
00:18:05.579 --> 00:18:12.603
They don't get the trigger time, they don't have the range time and often their range masters or their instructors don't speak their language.
00:18:12.603 --> 00:18:36.328
And so if there is something that I can give them that helps them be better marksmen, help them defend their life when seconds count, help them improve their draw stroke, improve their accuracy all those things that can really be life-saving for them I want them to have all the skills that they have, that they can possibly have, and so we started this program, and what I found was not only did they need the training, they really needed each other.
00:18:36.328 --> 00:18:46.961
These women needed to come together and find mentors and friends among their own community of other law enforcement women, and so it's been incredibly valuable and I'm really proud of the work that we do.
00:18:46.961 --> 00:18:54.042
So throughout the year, our members will nominate an officer in her local community and then I reach out and I invite her.
00:18:54.042 --> 00:18:59.718
I reach out to her sergeant and make sure that she gets time off and that she can get here to us, and then we cover everything.
00:18:59.718 --> 00:19:01.201
All of our sponsors help pitch in.
00:19:01.201 --> 00:19:12.580
Some of our chapters do fundraisers and we cover the officer's hotel and food and ammo and range fees and we give them swag and we make sure that they have a really amazing time here with us.
00:19:12.580 --> 00:19:15.909
So that's one of our big giving back initiatives.
00:19:15.909 --> 00:19:18.016
There are a couple others, of course.
00:19:18.016 --> 00:19:20.104
Domestic violence hits women pretty hard.
00:19:20.104 --> 00:19:32.309
We've been shaken in our own community by women who have been victims of domestic violence, and so that's something that we do to raise awareness and give women tools and support domestic violence prevention organizations.
00:19:33.195 --> 00:19:35.603
Close to my heart is pediatric brain cancer.
00:19:35.603 --> 00:19:50.063
My daughter is a fighter in that fight, and so as a league we give donations to a couple of different pediatric cancer foundations, raise awareness about pediatric brain cancer.
00:19:50.063 --> 00:19:58.559
I feel that had I known earlier in her journey to get an earlier diagnosis, maybe she would have kept her vision.
00:19:58.559 --> 00:20:07.678
So my daughter's blind, and so I just want to give other mothers the tools they need to maybe make those decisions and know that they're not alone in that very scary battle.
00:20:07.678 --> 00:20:13.861
But sometimes young girls can be fierce warriors in other ways as well and we can support each other in those ways too.
00:20:14.502 --> 00:20:25.563
So we support pediatric brain cancer foundations as well as the SEED Foundation, which is a nonprofit that helps the blind and visually impaired with self-defense options.
00:20:25.563 --> 00:20:30.900
So we do because my daughter is visually impaired, she's completely blind.
00:20:30.900 --> 00:20:37.017
I do a lot of work with the blind community too, on self-defense strategies for them.
00:20:37.017 --> 00:20:42.327
And then, um, we also have a non-profit called a girl in the gun legacy.
00:20:42.327 --> 00:20:51.403
It's a 501c3 to help us build uh, hopefully a facility someday where the girl in the gun community can gather and and train, and so that's also.
00:20:51.403 --> 00:20:52.527
Those are our giving back missions.
00:20:52.527 --> 00:21:00.315
But even even on the local level, there's a lot of chapters doing good work with their women's shelters and Reese across America.
00:21:00.315 --> 00:21:10.398
Many of our chapters can participate with that organization at Christmas time and and there's just a lot of really great heart in our community that wants to give back and make a difference.
00:21:10.921 --> 00:21:19.083
Okay, all right, yeah, I'm having been in former law enforcement, uh, and you're talking, talking about the ladies and stuff.
00:21:19.083 --> 00:21:28.496
You know, even officers in general, a lot of their department training is, I don't want to say lacking, but their range time is lacking.
00:21:28.496 --> 00:21:34.588
Uh, you know, they qualify once, maybe twice a year and uh, it's they.
00:21:34.588 --> 00:21:42.705
They don't really get the the time that they need on the range to better themselves or better their, their skill that they have.
00:21:42.705 --> 00:21:46.279
And I'm a I'm a real big proponent.
00:21:46.339 --> 00:22:00.144
I've helped uh train some of the uh local officers that I've uh in my community now that I'm not in law enforcement anymore, I've helped some of the recruits better they're shooting before they go to the academy.
00:22:00.144 --> 00:22:07.998
Once they get know that they've been applied or maybe they've gone and they've didn't pass the qualification for or something.
00:22:07.998 --> 00:22:15.999
I've had a couple of law enforcement heads reach out to me and say, hey, can you work with this person to get them up to speed and stuff.
00:22:15.999 --> 00:22:27.915
And I jump at the chance because I know that they don't get the time that they need to really work on their skills and if you don't practice or don't train, you lose the skill.
00:22:27.915 --> 00:22:30.799
It's like riding a bicycle.
00:22:32.303 --> 00:22:47.148
Yeah, and the officers have so many other initiatives that are important to their departments, whether it's politically motivated or whatever, there's a lot of different hours that they have to spend learning other initiatives, communication strategies and others.
00:22:47.148 --> 00:22:57.339
So a lot of these women don't even get defensive tactics in the academy, much less after the academy, tactics in the academy, much less after the academy.
00:22:57.339 --> 00:23:05.586
And so having a female defensive tactics instructors and allowing them to roll on the mats and not worry about getting hurt but really learn technique and having that time to train on it with other women is really beneficial.
00:23:05.586 --> 00:23:09.087
And then, of course, the firearms training and then some team building things that they do.
00:23:09.087 --> 00:23:15.819
But there's a lot of great tactics that they can learn from other agencies and other things that are working, especially gear.
00:23:16.261 --> 00:23:32.202
A lot of times many departments, particularly rural departments, don't have gear and equipment that fits women, and so they can find what's working for other officers, they can take it home, they can look at their department policy and see if it's something that they can get or maybe that they can purchase on their own according to their policy.
00:23:32.202 --> 00:23:39.222
So we've worked with a lot of agencies now to make sure that women get the care that they need and and that it's great, it's right for them.
00:23:39.222 --> 00:23:48.744
It's I mean, this is life-saving measures, really to give those ladies the tools and and skills that they need to do the work out there.
00:23:48.744 --> 00:23:52.119
They're all really amazing servant leaders, and so we want to be there for them.
00:23:52.662 --> 00:23:53.523
Okay, all right.
00:23:53.523 --> 00:24:01.449
So now that we've kind of peaked maybe, people's interest, uh, what are some of the membership perks?
00:24:01.449 --> 00:24:06.847
Uh, for, if somebody was to join girl on a gun, what are some of the membership perks that they have?
00:24:08.029 --> 00:24:10.332
Well, you can come to any of the events that are amazing.
00:24:10.332 --> 00:24:12.554
All of our events are out of this world.
00:24:12.554 --> 00:24:23.542
There's no one else doing events like we do, like our Drift Academy and our Sniper School and all of those things are really specialized activities that we've honed that.
00:24:23.542 --> 00:24:33.730
I'm fortunate that I get to kind of have a vision and then see it come together, see it come together.
00:24:33.730 --> 00:24:36.438
So those kinds of ideas are pretty incredible and it gives women training opportunities outside the box.
00:24:36.438 --> 00:24:44.583
So vehicle training that you wouldn't get at your local range or, you know, sniper training or armory or any of those things that might not be available at home.
00:24:44.583 --> 00:24:47.616
It gives you out of your bubble, so to speak.
00:24:47.616 --> 00:24:50.811
So those opportunities are really fantastic for members.
00:24:50.811 --> 00:24:56.144
The other things would be every Tuesday I send an email to all of our members with a training tip.
00:24:56.144 --> 00:25:05.314
There's usually some kind of marksmanship tip in there and reminders of upcoming events and some situational awareness or safety information.
00:25:05.314 --> 00:25:08.521
Every Tuesday we send that out to all of our members.
00:25:08.521 --> 00:25:12.555
And then there's so many.
00:25:12.555 --> 00:25:13.787
You get a packet in the mail.
00:25:13.787 --> 00:25:16.576
You get your membership card and your and your name tag.
00:25:16.576 --> 00:25:18.820
You get access to our virtual library.
00:25:18.820 --> 00:25:22.335
We have thousands of videos, hours of hours of videos.
00:25:22.335 --> 00:25:29.017
So we have hundreds of videos you can watch and some of them are, you know, 20 minutes, some of them are three and a half hours.
00:25:29.017 --> 00:25:32.775
Some of them are full training sessions that you can watch on our video library.
00:25:32.775 --> 00:25:38.593
So, depending on what skills you want to learn, you know what where you are in your journey.
00:25:38.593 --> 00:25:48.993
Maybe some people want to hear it a couple times, or they want to watch this video before they go take a class or get some introductory knowledge or really take a next level class to even see what's available out there.
00:25:48.993 --> 00:25:50.778
We have all of that on our website.
00:25:50.778 --> 00:25:54.003
So our video library is very extensive.
00:25:54.003 --> 00:26:02.596
It covers everything from pistol basics all the way up to tactics, advanced marksmanship, and we have that for competition.
00:26:02.596 --> 00:26:06.699
We have different discussions, we have non-lethal, we even have some survival.
00:26:06.699 --> 00:26:08.771
If you wanna learn how to run a chainsaw, there's things.
00:26:08.771 --> 00:26:10.297
We have those videos on our website.
00:26:10.297 --> 00:26:16.701
So we really run the gamut on knife defense and and, uh, gunsmithing.
00:26:16.701 --> 00:26:19.171
If you want to build our, we'll walk you right through it.
00:26:19.191 --> 00:26:27.224
So, with all of the videos on our website and that really give people um access to information, so I would say that that's probably the most valuable perk of membership.
00:26:27.224 --> 00:26:33.623
We also have a lot of really amazing partnerships with our sponsors, and so most of them offer discounts to our girls.
00:26:33.623 --> 00:26:39.643
Different times of year, we get different discounts that we roll out to members, especially if you come participate in our events.
00:26:39.643 --> 00:26:47.144
So, for example, the ladies who came to our national conference all got like 20% off, staccato.
00:26:47.144 --> 00:26:51.319
They got discounts from the Glock store.
00:26:51.319 --> 00:27:01.292
They got discounts from the HK store Um, there's, they got, uh, discounts from mass industries on their PCCs and rifles, like it's.
00:27:01.292 --> 00:27:13.102
It's really, um, it's incredible how our sponsors really want to support women in their journey, give them the tools and so, um, yeah, so we have a lot of really great discounts and perks like that too.
00:27:13.102 --> 00:27:20.278
So there's so many I can't even think of all of them, and it's only $50 a year, which is incredible.
00:27:20.859 --> 00:27:21.771
All right, yeah, that was.
00:27:21.771 --> 00:27:26.019
The next question was how much was the membership to join?
00:27:26.019 --> 00:27:33.218
And that's your girl on a gun level through all your clubs and everything.
00:27:34.772 --> 00:27:38.182
Yeah, you're joining the national club and you can go to any chapter.
00:27:38.671 --> 00:27:43.817
So if you are a member in Florida and you travel to Colorado, you can stop in at every chapter on the way.
00:27:43.817 --> 00:27:55.159
So when you're a member of one, you're a member of all, which really is amazing during the summer and for our snowbirds, as ladies travel around, they get to be a part of multiple communities and they get to go see what other chapters are doing.
00:27:55.159 --> 00:28:04.923
Every facilitator is a little bit different in her credentials and every range facility is different in the amenities that it offers, so some chapters may be able to do different things.
00:28:04.923 --> 00:28:18.221
But now that we have the girl again marksmanship program which we rolled out this year, it's been fun to see ladies take their books with them as they travel so that as they go to different events those facilitators can sign off on them and they can earn additional levels.
00:28:18.221 --> 00:28:23.138
And it really makes it fun to go to go visit other ladies and meet other people across the country.
00:28:23.138 --> 00:28:26.941
You know you always have a a welcoming community everywhere you go.
00:28:27.609 --> 00:28:28.412
Okay, all right.
00:28:28.412 --> 00:28:31.076
How many clubs in general are?
00:28:31.076 --> 00:28:33.903
Do you, do you know the number of clubs?
00:28:33.903 --> 00:28:35.531
Are they in all 50 states?
00:28:35.531 --> 00:28:42.183
Give us a little bit about the clubs and the numbers, if you can.
00:28:43.171 --> 00:28:44.755
We have members in all 50 states.
00:28:44.755 --> 00:28:47.922
We don't have chapters in all 50, but we have chapters in most.
00:28:47.922 --> 00:28:55.643
We have there's over there's like 280 chapters, something like that.
00:28:55.643 --> 00:28:58.974
Like I said, we're at 330 ranges.
00:28:58.974 --> 00:29:07.300
So some chapters have multiple ranges in their area, depending on if one has shotgun opportunity or, you know, one might be indoor, one might be outdoor.
00:29:07.300 --> 00:29:23.951
So we have some chapters that have multiple ranges, but for the most part it's in the two 300 area that we have chapters around the country and if there's not a chapter near you, you can join our national e chapter, which is our chapter for kind of our, our homeless girls, and they can participate virtually.
00:29:23.951 --> 00:29:25.635
We have different virtual activities.
00:29:25.635 --> 00:29:33.157
Dawn is the facilitator of that and so she has virtual discussions each month and training and points people to different videos or discussions.
00:29:33.157 --> 00:29:39.035
She brings in guest speakers and instructors to train and it's surprising how much one can learn virtually.
00:29:39.035 --> 00:29:45.434
We started virtual training back during COVID and it has been equally popular now.
00:29:46.076 --> 00:29:56.780
So, we have pretty much go on Zoom at least once a week, do some kind of presentation for different audiences, and, um, they're still wildly popular.
00:29:56.780 --> 00:30:10.234
We can still learn a lot and also have that connection with other people, um, virtually so that that's something that's available to members as well okay, uh, if they were wanted to find, uh, if there was a club in their area.
00:30:10.295 --> 00:30:19.653
They just want to go to your website and you have a drop down where they can see the map and everything to see if there's a club in their area yeah, exactly.
00:30:19.693 --> 00:30:21.176
They go to a girl in the gunorg.
00:30:21.176 --> 00:30:32.656
Like find a chapter at the top and you can put in the city closest to you and it'll bring up cities around you, or, uh, you can zoom in on the map to your area and see who's closest to you.
00:30:32.656 --> 00:30:37.358
If there's not a chapter near you, just go to your local range and ask them if they're interested.
00:30:37.358 --> 00:30:45.075
If they have a female instructor on staff or if they know a female instructor in the area, have her reach out to us and we'll start her on the onboarding process.
00:30:45.075 --> 00:30:47.431
She can learn about us and see if it's the right fit for her.
00:30:48.051 --> 00:30:49.875
Okay, yeah, that was the next one.
00:30:49.875 --> 00:30:52.421
If there wasn't one, how how would someone look up?
00:30:53.122 --> 00:31:03.980
and you kind of went over yeah, that's it, just send us an email email instructor and have a place to to host the events and everything yeah, it's the perfect storm of three things.
00:31:04.020 --> 00:31:07.258
You have to be a female instructor well, you have to be a certified instructor.
00:31:07.258 --> 00:31:07.960
You have to be female.
00:31:07.960 --> 00:31:09.853
You have to be a certified instructor, uh.
00:31:09.853 --> 00:31:11.194
And you have to have a range.
00:31:11.194 --> 00:31:17.173
So a range it's like range, not just someone's backyard, but a real range with safety protocols and insurance and all that kind of stuff.
00:31:17.173 --> 00:31:29.777
So we do have this compilation of credentials that instructors need to get, so but we start there and if they're interested, then we tell them what they need to get and they have some time to achieve those expectations.
00:31:29.978 --> 00:31:33.104
So they have to take a couple different communications courses.
00:31:33.104 --> 00:31:34.854
We want to make sure that they can speak and teach.
00:31:34.854 --> 00:31:42.250
They have to take a stop, the bleed hemorrhage control and a range response course to make sure that they can manage a line and handle any situations that might arise.
00:31:42.250 --> 00:31:52.701
They have to be a certified instructor and a certified RSO by a number of different approved academies and they have to have instructor insurance.
00:31:52.701 --> 00:31:55.252
Um, among a couple other things, they have to shoot.
00:31:55.252 --> 00:32:03.556
The FBI call on video so we can see it, we can see how well they can shoot, and once we see that, they can walk the walk and talk the talk we welcome on one board and we're off to the races.
00:32:04.037 --> 00:32:04.960
Okay, all right.
00:32:04.960 --> 00:32:06.790
Who would they or how would they?
00:32:06.790 --> 00:32:19.519
If there's a female instructor that's interested or a range that's interested in becoming a host range, who would they or how would they apply or get more information?
00:32:20.461 --> 00:32:25.239
Yeah, on our website a girl in the gunorg at the very bottom in the footer it says start a chapter.
00:32:25.239 --> 00:32:25.803
I think it might.
00:32:25.803 --> 00:32:29.411
It might even say that the top two, I can't remember but it says start a chapter.
00:32:29.411 --> 00:32:34.855
And that's where they can go and learn those credentials, learn a little bit more about us to see if it's the right fit for them.
00:32:34.855 --> 00:32:36.356
They can start the process.
00:32:36.356 --> 00:32:39.160
Step one they learn a little bit about us.
00:32:39.160 --> 00:32:40.740
Step two they tell us about them.
00:32:40.740 --> 00:32:47.527
And then step three they come on board so we make it really easy and they can get all the information they need.
00:32:49.769 --> 00:32:51.213
They'll know everything up front to see if it's the right fit.
00:32:51.213 --> 00:32:51.694
Okay, all right.
00:32:51.694 --> 00:32:54.501
Well, that was all the questions about girl and a gun.
00:32:54.501 --> 00:32:59.142
I had Anything else you want to add that we maybe didn't discuss or anything.
00:33:00.090 --> 00:33:03.019
I'm just so grateful for you giving me the opportunity to talk about it.
00:33:03.019 --> 00:33:09.275
I know that you're in Georgia, in a gap where we don't yet have a facilitator, and I would love to have a chapter there.
00:33:09.275 --> 00:33:21.401
So if anyone knows a facilitator or a potential facilitator and instructor in your area not just yours, brian, but across the country I would love to make those introductions and bring a girl on again to more women.
00:33:21.401 --> 00:33:22.895
It's a really great program.
00:33:22.895 --> 00:33:27.234
We have a lot of opportunities for instructors, particularly to grow their business.
00:33:27.234 --> 00:33:28.818
So we really want our ranges to succeed.
00:33:28.818 --> 00:33:30.063
We want our ranges to be profitable.
00:33:30.063 --> 00:33:31.085
We want our instructors to be profitable.
00:33:31.085 --> 00:33:31.767
We want our ranges to succeed.
00:33:31.767 --> 00:33:32.670
We want our ranges to be profitable.
00:33:32.670 --> 00:33:34.369
We want our instructors to be profitable.
00:33:34.369 --> 00:33:45.242
We want a really great relationship that can allow everyone to flourish and for us all to work together to, like you said, pass it down to the next generation.
00:33:45.703 --> 00:33:46.585
Okay, all right.
00:33:46.585 --> 00:33:47.925
Well, that's great.
00:33:47.925 --> 00:34:00.295
I look forward to maybe trying to facilitate the host range, since I can't officially be an instructor, but I hope I can help.
00:34:00.295 --> 00:34:05.904
I'll get with you after we end the recording and we'll talk a little bit more about that.
00:34:07.853 --> 00:34:16.244
Well, thank you for that too, because we would not have the success we have without the men in our world that are supporting us and encouraging women to come to us.
00:34:16.244 --> 00:34:21.610
Oftentimes people think that we're separatists or sexist, and it could not be further from the truth.
00:34:21.610 --> 00:34:30.284
We just know that women mentoring other women can be a very positive force for them to come into the industry, to find success, to build confidence and to stay in the industry.
00:34:30.284 --> 00:34:35.222
We want them to stay gun owners and be confident and responsible gun owners.
00:34:35.222 --> 00:34:39.253
We want them to participate in our Second Amendment discussions and advocacy.
00:34:39.253 --> 00:34:44.489
So thank you for encouraging that and for being a support of that.
00:34:44.489 --> 00:34:45.271
I really appreciate it.
00:34:45.853 --> 00:34:46.375
You're welcome.
00:34:46.375 --> 00:34:48.019
You're welcome, I enjoy it.
00:34:48.019 --> 00:34:53.023
Like I said, the majority of my students I do the women's only the USCCA's program.
00:34:53.023 --> 00:35:09.237
Like I said, the majority of, uh, my students, uh, I do the women's only the USCCA program and I get so many that will they don't want to take, like I said, take a co-ed class, but because of their fear of not looking intelligent enough or not knowing enough, feeling that they don't know enough and we all start somewhere.
00:35:09.498 --> 00:35:15.422
No, we don't come buy a gun and all of a sudden, hey, I know everything there is about a gun.
00:35:15.422 --> 00:35:25.943
It's a learning process and you have to start somewhere and even if you have to take a basic class to feel comfortable several times, I encourage that.
00:35:25.943 --> 00:35:53.864
There's no shame in repeating a class or even going with different instructors, because I tell people as an instructor, we all have different learning styles and teaching styles and something that I may teach you may not come across to you, but you go to another instructor and they explain it a different way and then that light bulb goes off and it's like ah, that's what he was talking about, and the same for the instructor student.
00:35:53.864 --> 00:36:07.284
So I really encourage following up, taking multiple classes, even repeating them with different instructors, just because you're always going to learn something different that didn't catch that previous class.
00:36:08.391 --> 00:36:10.438
Absolutely, and you don't know what you don't know.
00:36:10.438 --> 00:36:17.818
So you have to start somewhere and then, as you hear it a few times, it'll start to make sense and there'll be a lot of people there to support you.
00:36:17.818 --> 00:36:24.336
The only difference, really, between an all women's class and all guys class is that women tend to be a little more collaborative learners.
00:36:24.336 --> 00:36:28.498
We ask a lot more questions and so sometimes you can learn from other people asking questions.
00:36:28.498 --> 00:36:36.382
We don't have any machismo or ego, so that asking questions right, um, we don't have any machismo or ego, so that makes it a lot of fun and we also cheer for each other.
00:36:36.382 --> 00:36:38.108
So when you shoot, even if you miss, well, we're cheering for you.
00:36:38.108 --> 00:36:39.311
Good job, good try.
00:36:39.311 --> 00:36:51.173
And it always cracks the my, my guy friends up because he's like you know, like I've had guys before, instructors before, who are saying you know, the girls are all cheering and the guys are like she missed, why are we?
00:36:51.173 --> 00:36:51.695
Why are we?
00:36:51.695 --> 00:36:52.416
Why are we?
00:36:52.416 --> 00:36:52.717
Why?
00:36:53.239 --> 00:36:54.161
are we cheering.
00:36:54.300 --> 00:36:55.603
It's just a different environment.
00:36:55.603 --> 00:36:59.961
We laugh a lot, we have a lot of fun and it's a serious topic.
00:36:59.961 --> 00:37:10.820
But to bring joy into it and to bring that friendship and camaraderie and that attitude to it, just I mean there's nothing better.
00:37:11.550 --> 00:37:13.155
Right, okay, all right, all right.
00:37:13.155 --> 00:37:31.474
Well, final question uh, I'm asking this for all my guests this year, and I got this from rob beckman whenever I was on his and his podcast and have listened um asking one question, and this year's question, or this season's question, was what do you do to relax or de-stress from the daily demands of life?
00:37:33.635 --> 00:37:35.577
Well, lately I've been binging Netflix.
00:37:35.577 --> 00:37:38.498
It's been really ridiculous, but that's kind of what I've been doing.
00:37:38.498 --> 00:37:48.626
I leave the office pretty late at night and I just kind of go home and my dog and my kids kind of pile on and I've been watching silly Netflix series.
00:37:48.626 --> 00:37:50.266
That's kind of what I've been doing.
00:37:57.610 --> 00:37:59.657
Not super intelligent, but it definitely helps me just think about nothing for a while.
00:37:59.657 --> 00:38:02.489
Yeah, and that's that's part of the reason I asked this question, because, uh, we all do something that's different.
00:38:02.489 --> 00:38:05.434
Uh, we all have our our go-to.
00:38:05.434 --> 00:38:08.021
Uh, not everybody, you know, being gun owners.
00:38:08.021 --> 00:38:13.300
No, sometimes the question is gas, oh, I go to the range to de-stress.
00:38:13.300 --> 00:38:14.081
That's not.
00:38:14.081 --> 00:38:16.336
No, sometimes that's a stressor for people.
00:38:16.336 --> 00:38:25.085
Um, some people like reading, some like listening to music, some like jogging, biking, no, a whole number of things.
00:38:25.085 --> 00:38:36.650
And I wanted to bring this question to out to help people find what they can do or what they enjoy to relax and to de-stress from the daily routine.
00:38:38.574 --> 00:38:43.804
Yeah, I wish that I did something that was more positive, like gardening or jogging or something that was healthy.
00:38:43.804 --> 00:38:54.521
But, no, I consider all of that part of my job to be strong and to go to the gym and to dry fire and to go to the range and make it work for me.
00:38:54.762 --> 00:39:04.103
It's something I'm very proud of and I I work hard at it, but it is all of those things are work, so I wish I had more um and even reading.
00:39:04.103 --> 00:39:09.280
I read are gun related and instructor related, mindset related.
00:39:09.280 --> 00:39:16.315
Uh, so we have a girl in a book club, so usually I'm reading books, either getting ahead or getting caught up on the book of the month.
00:39:16.315 --> 00:39:21.682
So, yeah, I wish that I had more productive relaxation.
00:39:22.530 --> 00:39:37.820
It's like I had Beth Alcazar on and I asked this question and she said surprisingly that I asked it because she laughed and she said I'm not laughing at you or the question, but you know the timing.
00:39:37.820 --> 00:39:41.934
She said one of her girlfriends had gotten her a massager.
00:39:41.934 --> 00:39:44.858
You know she has some migraines and it goes over.
00:39:44.858 --> 00:39:54.311
Uh, massages the eye area plays, has bluetooth that plays music, and she said that's, that's her go-to uh for de-stressing and stuff.
00:39:54.311 --> 00:40:09.898
And no, I, it's just uh, everybody's different and I encourage people to find something to take some of the stress away from your daily routine because if you don't, it's gonna pile up and it's gonna affect your health both mentally and physically.
00:40:09.898 --> 00:40:11.501
So Agreed.
00:40:12.061 --> 00:40:13.505
So all right, Robin.
00:40:13.505 --> 00:40:19.523
Well, if anybody wanted to find out more about you, or gun a girl on a gun, how would they?
00:40:19.523 --> 00:40:20.632
Where would they go?
00:40:20.632 --> 00:40:21.894
How would they contact you?
00:40:22.737 --> 00:40:26.574
Well, I'd love it if everyone would just go like our Facebook page and our Instagram page.
00:40:26.574 --> 00:40:32.358
We're trying to build up those numbers a little bit, but you can find me at anything a girl.
00:40:32.358 --> 00:40:37.057
And again our website is a girl and againorg, our facebook is ag8.
00:40:37.057 --> 00:40:38.842
No, facebook is a girl.
00:40:38.842 --> 00:40:39.503
And again club.
00:40:39.503 --> 00:40:46.518
And uh, x and instagram are agag club, so they don't match, but you can hopefully find us.
00:40:46.518 --> 00:40:48.402
And uh, yeah, I'm at.
00:40:48.402 --> 00:40:51.175
All of those roads lead to me, so you can find me.
00:40:51.677 --> 00:40:52.460
Okay, all right.
00:40:52.460 --> 00:41:08.346
Well, I appreciate your time today and look forward to working with you and hopefully we can have you back on as you grow and add numbers to the organization and report on some of the good things and the growth and all that.
00:41:08.346 --> 00:41:11.016
So I appreciate your time today, robin, thank you.
00:41:11.338 --> 00:41:11.579
Great.
00:41:11.579 --> 00:41:12.521
Thank you so much.
